For those who say that “Martha hate isn’t that common”, or when it gets posted and tagged it’s “well thought-out”.

No. Just, no. This is not okay.

It is perfectly okay of you to express your opinions on your blog. That’s fine. But if you post something negative about a character, don’t tag your post with that character’s name.

I don’t understand how this is so complicated.

Just. Don’t. Do. It.

These opinions are often from people who are failing to give concrete, evidence based reasons on why they dislike Martha. As a Martha Jones fan, I’ll admit that there are some criticisms to be made about her character and the direction that RTD took with her(the same could be said about the other companions as well and RTD/Moffat’s handling of them). That aside, I argue that most of the hate directed towards Martha is based on the attitudes towards race that the viewers have been socialized in(these are also the same people that when called out on these attitudes, will always say “I don’t see race” or the classic “I have black/brown people friends” defence). This is the only reasonable way to explain the phenomenon of solely black women characters(or any other female characters of color in general) getting staggering amounts of hate that occurs across many fandoms.

I also find it appalling that these people also love to hate on the actress, instead of directing their misguided hate onto the person who is really to blame for the character, which is the guy running the show. For instance, just because I dislike Rose or the direction her character took, that doesn’t mean that I will start hating on Billie Piper or her acting abilities. The actors/actresses are merely following the instructions given to them by the showrunner(RTD in this case). So ultimately, any issues that come up in regards to a character and their development in this case, are RTD’s fault, not Freema’s.
